Puppy Potty Training Steps
- Begin by setting up an area for your dog to be in. This can be a crate, a playpen, or a sectioned off area. Baby-gates are good for sectioning part of the house. In this area set up the puppy's living space.
- Establish an eating and bathroom schedule for the puppy. Feed the puppy at the same time (and don't leave food out all the time), take him to potty at the same time, and take him to the same place.
- Take your puppy out at least once an hour and after he sleeps, eats, or plays.
- Right after he finishes, mark the action with a verbal command, "Go Potty" so that he understands what the command means. Telling him to, "Go Potty" before he has the proper action to associate with the command will slow down the training process.
- After he has finished going potty, praise him and give him a reward - treats, attention or time to play. If the weather is nasty it is okay to bring him in for play - the key is that he does not associate going with the end of free time since that encourages him to hold his wastes in.

Free Potty Training Tips
- Use odor-neutralizing cleaning products to ensure he cannot smell his previous potty.
- Take the puppy or dog outside after he eats, drinks, wakes up or finishes playing.
- Check with a vet if the problem is occurring in a previously house-broken dog.
- Keep your puppy on a consistent eating, drinking and potty schedule.
- Be patient. Housetraining usually takes 3-4 weeks but can take a few months so be patient with your new puppy or dog if he is struggling.
